The Subtle Colors of Winter

An overnight storm left five inches of fresh snow on a somewhat soggy landscape. Warmer days earlier in January had melted much of the previously frozen waters allowing me one more chance to capture snowscapes with open water reflections. This wetland in Gilmanton has always caught my eye no matter the season. During warmer months it is not unusual to find Great Blue Herons searching for dinner. Autumn brings reflections of red and orange leaves on the water's surface. But winter, though a bit more challenging to photograph, is my favorite time for this composition.

Within a couple of days of taking this shot, the nights turned cold and the open water quickly became iced over. Two more days later we received ten inches of snow on top of the ice. Timing is everything in photography.
