Contemplating Going West

A female House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) rests, facing west in the afternoon sun. This weathervane sits atop a multi-unit martin house these house sparrows have taken over.

When I took this picture I considered it a “throw-away” image; a shot I took to check exposure settings and accuracy of focus. When I opened it on my computer, I oddly fell in love with the image. It was taken on Thanksgiving Day (USA) while we waited for guests to arrive. My intent was to photograph some ducks floating on the river. But this first shot of the afternoon has become my favorite.

This is a 5:4 crop factor. Below are alternate crops of 16:9 and 1:1 square.
